What is a dhol group, and what is a dholi?

A dhol group is a team of live drummers who perform on the dhol — a large, double-headed barrel drum played with two sticks — to drive the energy of an event. Unlike a DJ or a recorded playlist, a dhol group is a physical performance. Guests walk behind it, dance to it, and film it.

The words people use for this service overlap, which causes confusion when comparing quotes:

Dholi and dhol wala both mean the individual player. “Dholi” is the older term; “dhol wala” is more common in everyday Lahore usage.
Dhol group, dhol party and dhol team all mean the same thing — two or more players performing together.
Dhol wale is simply the plural.

A dholki is something different, and worth clarifying because the word does double duty. As an instrument, the dholki is a smaller, lighter drum played with the hands rather than sticks, used to accompany singing. As an event, the dholki is the informal pre-wedding night where the bride’s family gathers to sing. We cover both meanings below.

Hiring a dhol group in Lahore costs between PKR 2,000 for a single dhol wala and PKR 50,000 or more for a full band baja with a dhol team. The two things that move the price most are group size and performance duration — a 30-minute mehndi entrance and a 90-minute baraat procession are not the same job.

Individual dhol wala PKR 2,000 to 5,000: One experienced player, 30 to 60 minutes. The most budget-friendly option, suited to small private functions, a single entrance moment, or a home dholki night.
Standard dhol group PKR 5,000 to 7,000: Two to four players, 1 to 1.5 hours. Our most commonly booked tier. Players rotate so the tempo holds through a long set instead of dropping off halfway. Suits mehndi functions, mid-size baraats and corporate entrances.
Extended dhol group PKR 7,000 to 15,000: Four to six players, 1 to 1.5 hours. Built for bigger guest lists and outdoor venues where sound needs to carry across open ground. Suits large baraats, lawn weddings and high-attendance mehndis.

Advance payment:An advance is required to confirm and hold your date. The amount depends on the dhol package and number of players booked
Travel outside Lahore: Travel charges for Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Sialkot apply per city and are added on top of the package price. Bookings requiring travel outside Lahore must be confirmed and paid in advance at the time of booking — no same-day travel bookings are accepted.
Overrun charges: If the baraat runs past the agreed finish time, an hourly extension charge applies. The rate depends on the booking package selected — [you'll need to give the actual per-hour extension rate per package, since this varies].
Cancellation and rescheduling: You may cancel your booking at any time. Once cancelled, your advance payment will be refunded within 24–48 hours.

Dhol services for every event

Different events need different pacing. We set group size and set structure by event type rather than running one format across the board.

Baraat and barat dhol

Our drummers arrive ahead of the scheduled time, confirm the procession route with the family, and check in with your photographer and videographer so the entrance is captured properly. The beat for a baraat is processional and commanding — steady enough to walk to, loud enough to announce arrival. We coordinate around the ghorri, sehra bandi and the walk to the venue entrance, and hold energy through the doli if required.

Mehndi dhol

A mehndi runs in bursts, not one continuous set. We time high-tempo segments to the moments that need them — the thaal entrance, the couple’s arrival, family dance-offs — and step back in between so the drumming lifts the evening instead of flattening it.

Dholki night dhol

The dholki is a smaller, informal function built around singing and clapping. This calls for a lighter touch: usually one or two players supporting the singers rather than a full group competing with them. Most dholki bookings sit comfortably in our individual or standard tier.

Valima dhol

Valima is the calmest of the three wedding functions. Most clients book a scaled-down segment covering the couple’s entrance only — typically 20 to 30 minutes with a smaller group.

Engagement and nikah

Short, contained sets marking arrival and the moment the ceremony concludes. Group size follows guest count.

Corporate dhol

Corporate performances are timed to a cue, not to a mood. Ribbon-cuttings, product reveals, VIP arrivals and store openings usually need a tight 10 to 15 minute set that starts on a signal from your event team. Our drummers take direction and will rehearse the timing with you or your agency beforehand. Corporate bookings are quoted separately from wedding packages.

Birthdays and private celebrations

Birthdays, anniversaries and family gatherings follow a mehndi-style model — shorter, high-energy bursts rather than one long performance.

Cultural, community and sports events

Basant celebrations, community festivals, team entrances, tournament openings and victory celebrations. Group size scales to the crowd and the space.

How many dhol players do you need?

As a rough rule: one to two players for an indoor gathering under 100 guests, two to four for a standard hall function, four to six for an outdoor lawn or a large baraat, and six to eight for a venue where the sound needs to reach several hundred people across open ground.

Two factors decide this more than guest count alone.

Venue type. Indoors, sound reflects and a small group carries easily. Outdoors, it dissipates — the same two players who filled a hall will sound thin on a lawn or a street procession. Open-air baraats almost always need four or more.

Duration. Playing the dhol is physically demanding. A single player cannot sustain full volume and tempo for 90 minutes without the energy dropping, and the drop is audible. Larger groups rotate players through the set, which is why our Standard tier upward is built around rotation rather than simply “more drummers.”

Band baja, brass band and musical night services

A band baja barat is the traditional wedding band — brass and wind instruments playing melody over a percussion base, walking ahead of or alongside the groom’s procession. A Fauji-style band follows a military brass format, with uniformed players and a more formal, ceremonial sound. Both are usually combined with a dhol team rather than replacing it: the band carries the tune, the dhol carries the drive.

Band baja is the right choice when the entrance needs scale and formality — a premium wedding, an inauguration, a procession moving down a main road where a small group would get lost. It is not the right choice for a compact indoor mehndi, where a standard dhol group does the job better and for a fraction of the cost.

Band size and pricing depend on the number of players and the length of the performance. Because bands require more advance coordination than a dhol group, we ask for earlier notice on these bookings.

Female dhol players and specialised performers

We provide all-female dhol groups for women-only functions, quoted individually rather than by standard tier.

Demand for this comes mostly from mehndi and dholki nights where the family wants a women-only segment, and from clients who prefer female performers throughout. Availability is more limited than for our standard groups, so book further ahead .

We can also arrange a specific named performer or a specialised soloist where a client wants a particular style or reputation attached to the event. These bookings are performer-dependent and priced on request.

Dhol beats and set design

The reason event type changes our pricing is that it changes what is actually played.

Bhangra beat is the fast, driving rhythm most people picture when they think of the dhol. It is what fills a dance floor, and it is the backbone of mehndi and dholki sets.

Dhamaal is heavier and more trance-like, traditionally associated with shrine and Sufi settings. It suits moments that need weight rather than speed.

Luddi and jhummar are slower, more circular folk rhythms — used for group dances where guests move together rather than individually.

Bolian are the call-and-response verses sung over a dhol beat, common at mehndi nights when families take turns performing.

For a baraat we lead with a steady processional beat that people can walk to, then lift into bhangra at the venue entrance. For a mehndi we run bhangra in bursts and drop into luddi or jhummar when the family wants everyone on the floor together. Getting this sequencing right is the difference between drummers who play and drummers who read a crowd.

How to book a dhol group

The process is the same whether you are booking one dhol wala for a home dholki or a full band baja for a major wedding.

Advance and written confirmation. A booking advance secures your date. You receive written confirmation listing the group size, duration, price and agreed timings.
Pre-event coordination. For weddings and corporate events, your named point of contact calls you, your planner or your venue three to five days before the date to confirm timing, venue access and any changes. This happens before the event, not on the morning of it.
Event day. Drummers arrive ahead of the scheduled time, check in with the venue or family, and perform to the agreed plan.
Follow-up. We check in afterwards for feedback.

How far in advance should you book?

For peak-season weddings, four to eight weeks is comfortable. Off-season, one to two weeks is usually enough. Band baja and female dhol group bookings need longer lead time than standard dhol groups.

Same-day and urgent bookings

Our line is open 24 hours precisely because plans change. If you need a dhol group today or tomorrow, call rather than message — we will tell you immediately whether we can cover it. Availability at short notice depends entirely on the date, and we will not accept a booking we cannot staff properly.

Timing rules for dhol performances in Lahore

Under the Punjab Marriage Functions Act 2016, all marriage-related ceremonies in Punjab must conclude by 10:00 pm. This covers mayun, mehndi, barat, nikah, rukhsati and walima, and it applies to marriage halls, marquees, farmhouses and functions held at private homes alike. This restriction was reaffirmed by provincial authorities in 2026, and enforcement in Lahore is more active than in most of the province.

In practice this means your dhol performance must be planned backwards from a 10:00 pm hard stop. A baraat scheduled to arrive at 9:45 pm leaves no room for the procession, and venues will cut power regardless of what you have paid for. We build set timings around your venue’s actual cut-off during the coordination call.

The same Act also prohibits fireworks, crackers and aerial firing at marriage functions, and bans decorating streets and roads outside the venue building. We do not offer fireworks as an add-on. Where clients want additional visual impact, we recommend legal alternatives such as bhangra dancers or a larger group format.

Venue-specific and housing-society rules may be stricter than the law. Confirm your venue’s cut-off time when you book it, and share it with us.
